INDIA on FILM – Varanasi at play
Yeah, yeah. Everyone knows all about Varanasi and the cremations and the old people sitting around waiting to die in this holiest of places. But, believe me, anyone who has ever been there knows that in Varanasi life far outperforms death.
This set is dedicated to playing and games. Which, by some account, could be one of life’s most magnificent displays of vitality. Shot on film early 2014.
Hope you enjoyed this set. The subjects portrayed certainly seemed to be having a good ol’ time…

As you say Alessandro, so much vitality in your great shots and always good to see children having so much fun!
Thanks, Patti. So right – when out and about shooting street, the sound of children laughing and shrieking has me instinctively reaching for my camera…
π I must have had too much of pinot grigio cause in the last shot I believed I saw folded chicken and I came close to see what kind of footwear they have. Sorry Alessandro – my imagination is wild sometimes and I do believe seeing a dead, featherless chicken in one of your shots once. I like all of your photos, but is there a chance for shots from Roma soon, or anywhere in Europe?
Hello Paula! So glad you are having fun misinterpreting the photos. Monochrome does that, sometimes… π
Roma? I hope so. In truth, i have so many things going on right now that just going out with a camera is a delectable use of time, but one which i really can’t afford at this time. Hopefully, things will improve soon. Thanks for the patience and the ongoing support!
Sempre, Alessandro. I hope you’ll sort everything out. Happy Easter!
This was a lovely twist to what travelers usually share when they capture bits of Varanasi. I really loved your quote about play being one of life’s most weighted expressions of vitality.
Thanks, TP! People do tend to focus on the more morbid goings-on in Varanasi. Bit of a shame, really…
Bellissime, davvero.
Grazie, caro!
Very nice post once again. That’s a good topic; as you mention not the idea that spring to min when you think of Varanasi. I particularly like the one with the bicycle
.
Thanks, Waex! The bicycle one is the only one i took two frames of, because the scene was so great i wanted to make sure i got a decent shot. So i’m very glad it works – thanks again.
Awesome captures as usual, Alessandro! And BTW…the game being played in the second frame is called “Gulli Danda” π
Oh, wow! Thank you very much. I got so engrossed in finding the right time to fire the shutter (a long-ish ten or fifteen minutes, as i recall), that i completely forgot to ask the locals the name of the game. π
Some lovely shots my friend
Thank you very much, pal!
The exuberance of youth shines in your images, Alessandro. Fantastic.
Hey, these aren’t square! π
haha! No, indeed. My respect for the so-called “Leica format” (24x36mm) forbade me from cropping these into squares. Which i have no qualms doing with digital phoitographs. Thank so very much, Karen! π
una piu’ bella dell’altra!
saluti,
Mille grazie, caro!
