ROME – street photography III
It’s been a bright few days for photography, here in the Eternal City. Would you agree?

View from the Quirinale. Note the person on the right – expensive sneakers, blue jeans, shades. That’s a Roman policeman, baby.

Due to the recent economic downturn, living quarters for soldiers have become ever more cramped. Quirinale.

Dang – a seagull photobombed my shot! And, why are there so many seagulls in Rome, anyway? Via di Ripetta.

There’s nothing like lion drool to rinse a wine glass. Because it’s ok to drink in the streets, but it is better to do so in style. Largo Santa Susanna.

It did take years of practice in India, but now my dream of levitating for a living has finally come true! Piazza del Popolo.
I hope you enjoyed this set. I certainly enjoyed shooting, selecting, editing, selecting again and editing one final time this bunch. Because that’s what it takes me to get a good picture. A camera is no longer enough. But, hey, the extra work is almost beginning to seem worth it…
Care to point out which ones you found the best? Thanks!

Ah, images of la dolce vita! Glad to hear you’ve been soaking up some sunshine in your corner of Europe, Alessandro.
Thanks, Tricia – we went from freezing to roasting. But i’m not complaining: i run on solar energy…
Hard decition. Very good ones, Alessandro. The lion my nr. 2..
Thanks for the kind words and for taking the time to do this, Bente!
I especially like the ‘cramped quarters’ image, the composition is brilliant – love the stark contrast and its simplicity….and needless to say, the caption is brilliant!
Thanks, Lianne! I almost never use the long end of my zoom. Should probably do so more often, to carve out the neat little details…
wow!! policemen wear those to work!!! Its like going to school not wearing uniforms! 🙂 My favorite, incidentally was the cramped quarters! 🙂
When police dress like that and drive unmarked cars, they can probably find crooks more easily, but us regular folk can’t spot the cop in the crowd if and when we need one…
Thanks, Know-All!
Difficult to vote for just one image! Great set of shots! 🙂
Lovely comment, thanks. I’ve set the poll up so that if you have more than one favorite, you can post multiple choices…
Re-voted! 🙂
For sheer style, I love the levitation picture. Now if only I could do that.
A bit of welding, and you could be right up there, too…
Whoa!! How’s that dude levitating?
He is actually sitting on a seat welded to the pole, which is affixed to a base concealed by a small rug. The whole contraption is concealed by the robes…
Whoa!! That’s a genius idea!!
The lion and the girl… Delicious contrast!
Beauty and the beast…
Thanks, Antonio.
I went with the guy washing the wine glass – so convinient 😀 , why did the woman’s ass had to win the poll?! 😀
Thanks – i loved that guy with the wine glass. He showed up, uninvited, just as i was ready to take the shot. 🙂
But, wait: ass? What?
Thanks for explaining the levitation – that was making me feel he had either leapt or you Photoshopped something. Wild. And forget the seagull – are those all antennas up there? I remember your post of all the satellite disks . . .
Thanks – those “levitators” are all over Rome, and they rake quite a profit – at least until the novelty wears off. Yes, those are all old (now obsolete) analogue television antennas – one per tv set. Great eye!
Oh, and I voted for two, just to see if it would work. 😉 Was that policeman on duty dressed like that?
Yes. On duty. Standing guard to the presidential palace. Where just a few weeks ago some freak shot two policemen, in broad daylight. Are these not odd times? 😦
Awful. Yes, odd and disturbing around the world in general. 😦
Quite a bit of sunshine here, too, but no one levitating in the streets – what’s your secret? : )
Terrific!
Haha! Secret is – an iron contraption, basically a stool with only one foot and a wide, concealed, base. All hidden by the robes…. Everyone finds this incredibly clever – as do i…
Thank you 🙂
That was a hard choice. But the last one blew me away. ~amy
It’s so unusual to see some truly original “living statues.” People’s reactions are also funny to watch – many heads get scratched as they try to figure out how it’s done… Thanks, Amy!
My pleasure, I usually gobble up everything you take, in what seems to end too soon. Take more please.~amy
I went searching through your blog again thinking that I might have skipped some old posts – could not find any, but the good news is that I remember all of these pics from before. Yep, they are memorable 😀
Thanks, darling. I have been trying to arrange my better photos of Rome into a book, but selecting, sequence-ing and finally matching the images (think “spread”: an open book always shows two pages at a time) into a photo book is a job that should be left to a pro. Which, unfortunately, i can’t afford at this time. It is – to say the least – challenging. But i am stubborn… 🙂
Hmm, I don’t if a pro would do a better job than you, but I will be happy to see the book published. Keep me posted. I hear Rome is rainy and cold today. I hope that last year’s flood won’t repeat itself 😀
