Rome almost got flooded. I mean, seriously. Many parts did, including my mother’s house just north of Rome, though not badly. All things considered, the damage could have been much worse. The big walls did manage to contain the raging waters in the city center, most of which was spared.
Really, it was scary. The Tiber river, normally a peaceful citizen of Rome, had turned into a snarling monster. I have pictures. When the level is back to normal i will put them up side-by side. Now the waters are receding and i – we – are all drawing a huge sigh of relief. Heck, much better than that: i am exstatic.
So, here are a few classic photographs of Rome, some taking during the recent near-flooding, some from the files. Enjoy!
Hope you enjoyed this little window on a soggy-but-rapidly-draining old lady of a city. All photographs taken in 2012.
