PLASTIC PEOPLE – in rome’s shop windows

some say real flesh-and-bones italians are handsome people. that’s just because they have not met the plastic ones. please allow me to introduce you…

yay! i just love the attention…

tough guy

hairy twins

looove your shades

perky

as soon as i find my wig i’m ready to go

oops, i forgot to wear my face

who needs a head when you’re wearing such pretty things?

ok, so i’m dumb. but at least my neck is thicker than yours

i hate it when my plastic hair gets in my plastic eyes

i’m cool. i like elvis

aw, man! it’s raining chains…

are you still there? yep – right behind you.

hey – why is that guy poking a camera in our faces? just look away and ignore him, he’ll tire soon…

wish they’d clean the glass – i’m allergic to dust

what? no, this is our natural color. really.

you really think i look like obama? oh, i am sooo flattered

don’t you think i just have the cutest nose?

but remember, all you plastic people out there: if you’re handsome and you know it, it’s a sin

in a country that counts the perennial quest for beauty among its national pastimes, it is perhaps to be expected that even mannequins would be movie-star good-looking.

pictures taken through shop windows in rome’s center in spring time.

the most interesting thing in them is the fact that plastic people never smile.

true. it seems the beautiful fear that smiling might make them ugly.

but, truth is, smiling makes the not-so-beautiful a lot more good-looking. or less ugly. whichever comes first ;)

it really is. and the more they try to embellish it, the uglier it looks to me.

      thank you, christina

True, just like plastic surgery. At one point it starts to look incredibly scary!

I can’t believe even the mannequin is that beautiful/handsome!! (perhaps the flesh and bone somewhat came from the plastic one? A witch gave the soul to them? :p) Once again, I like the funny caption of your photos :D

Hey Alessandro—I had seen and “liked” your set already! The last two and the “are you still there” faceless pair are my favorites. There is something strange about them, maybe because they stand defiantly illustrating the vacant, cold traits that exist in the human race. I’m going to shoot Nora again in next few days and if I get anything unusual, I’ll post. Let me know when you post mannequins next. Best. Hattie

I also take photos of shop windows and mannequins. I saw an exhibition at the Getty museum earlier this year of Lionel Feininger. He liked to shoot reflections. So I started trying it out.
Love your photos they bring back such good memories.

thank you very much for your kind words, penny.

i also find the work of other photographers to be inspirational. my two personal favorites are henri cartier-bresson and robert doisneau. :)
